The Interconnection between Movement Therapy and Emotional Wellness

We often think of the mind and body as two separate parts of ourselves. But how often have we noticed that when the mind is overwhelmed, we feel it in our body too? A stressful day can lead to us having tense shoulders, a restless body, shallow breathing, feeling heavy etc., which we cannot really explain. On the other hand, when you’re having a stressful day, a simple activity like going for a walk, stretching, dancing, or moving our body in a way we want, can leave us feel calmer and more at ease. That is exactly where movement therapy comes into the picture. It recognizes the connection between our body and our emotional well-being, using movement as a means to explore emotions, increase body awareness, encourage self-expression, and at the core, support psychological wellbeing.

Many of us find it difficult to express our emotions. We may know that we are upset, anxious, overwhelmed, stressed, emotionally drained etc., but we struggle to explain what we are feeling. Movement plays a major role in such a case. Dance and movement are forms of non-verbal communication. A change in rhythm, the way we hold and control our body, can communicate something about our internal experiences.

Having grown up around dance, I have often found it interesting how much emotion can be communicated without saying a single word. It allows individuals to explore what they are experiencing or feeling at their own pace, and in a space where they do not necessarily have to find the “right” words.

Creating a Space that Belongs to You

One of the most valuable aspects of movement, and personally, my favourite, is the sense of ownership it can create! The movement is yours; the pace is yours; and the space you create for yourself, is yours! Movement therapy brings out the version of you, that is completely true toyourself. It creates a space that only you have power over, and what you do and feel in the space, is just yours to own, without having the need to express what you feel, with words.

The space that you create, is just yours, and the feeling? Again, yours!

We all know that our bodies naturally respond to stress. When we are under pressure, we may notice changes in our breathing, muscle tension, heart rate, sleep, energy levels. Gentle, rhythmic, and mindful movement can encourage us to slow down, pay attention to physical traits, and reconnect with our bodies. At the end, movement helps us stay in the present, and to step away from constant mental stimulation. Over time, developing this awareness can support emotional regulation and healthier ways of responding to stress.

Rather than ignoring what the body is communicating, movement encourages us to listen to it!

Movement and the Feeling of Connection

Emotional wellness does not only mean a relationship with ourselves. It also involves others. Loneliness is a growing mental health epidemic. Social dancing has been shown to improve holistic wellness across the lifespan. While dancing with a group, you tend to foster a connection, and create a sense of belonging and trust.

There is something special about moving alongside another person. You may enter a room as strangers, but sharing an activity and experiencing movement together can create a sense of community, and over time, these experiences can lead to friendships and a feeling of being seen and supported. These shared experiences allow people to feel seen, supported, improve interpersonal skills, and create opportunities for lasting friendships. At the end, you make the best of friends with people who you share something with!

More than just Movement

Movement therapy is not simply about exercising or keeping the body active. It is about recognizing that our physical and emotional experiences are deeply connected. It provides a space to express feelings that are difficult to verbalise, manage stress, connect with others, and develop confidence. Perhaps most importantly, movement reminds us that emotional wellness does not always have to being with a conversation. It can be something that feels completely your own!

Isn’t that the beauty of movement? You do not always have to know exactly where it is taking you. Sometimes, you simply have to move, listen to yourself, and allow yourself to be present.

Have you ever felt like you are not being seen? Have you ever felt that you are always somewhere in
